A war on the past, present, and future By Hamid Golpira
The Iraq war is actually a war against the past, present, and future.
It is a war against the past because the occupiers are implementing a program of cultural destruction.
Iraq is one of the cradles of world civilization.
And much of the world’s cultural heritage has been lost as a result of the war.
The most egregious example of this was the looting of the National Museum of Iraq after the fall of Baghdad in 2003.
Venezuelan writer Fernando Baez called it the worst act of cultural destruction to befall Iraq since 1258, which was the year Hulegu Khan and the Mongolians conquered Baghdad, destroyed the Abbasid caliphate and burned its capital, killed 200,000 to 500,000 residents of the city, destroyed the libraries of Baghdad, including the Grand Library of Baghdad, which was known as the House of Wisdom, and killed most of the scholars of the city, which had been one of the cultural centers of the Islamic world for many years until that catastrophe.
In an article entitled “Invaders” published in the April 25, 2005 edition of The New Yorker, Ian Frazier wrote: “So many books from Baghdad’s libraries were flung into the Tigris that a horse could walk across on them. The river ran black with scholars’ ink and red with the blood of martyrs.”
Baghdad fell on April 9, 2003, but no U.S. troops were stationed at the National Museum of Iraq to protect it until April 16. At the time, U.S. commanders said they needed all their soldiers for the war effort, but two dozen soldiers could have prevented the looting of the National Museum of Iraq, which is also called the Baghdad Museum.
Consumers need to be particularly careful during vacation season because identity thieves come out in droves. That makes it pivotal that consumers keep their debit cards on ice, said Beth Givens, director of the Privacy Rights Clearing House and one of the nation's foremost experts on keeping your private information private.
What makes debit cards so dangerous? Givens has so many reasons, her organization has put out an exhaustive fact sheet on whether you should use cash, credit or debit cards when shopping. (The report also explains the shortcomings of gift cards.)
Here's the short version of the dangers of debit:
1. Loss Limits
Like credit cards, federal law limits your liability for fraudulent transactions on a debit card to $50. But that's only if you notify your financial institution within two days of discovering the theft. If you're a space cadet and don't check your bank statements for a couple of months, you could lose everything.
2. Pay Now/Reimburse Later
If someone has fraudulently used your credit card, you don't have to pay the charge. But when somebody has fraudulently used your debit card, the money comes directly out of your account in real time. That means you're out the money while the bank does a leisurely examination of their records to investigate your fraud claim. Many consumers complaining to Privacy Rights Clearing House said they lost access to their funds for several weeks. In the meantime, they were caught short and unable to pay their bills, Givens said.
3. Merchant Disputes
The same problem affects merchant disputes. If you pay with a credit card when ordering something online, and that product comes damaged, broken or not at all, you can dispute the charge and stop payment with your credit card. If you used your debit card, the charge is paid when you made the order. By the time you find out the goods weren't what was advertised, the merchant has your cash and you're in the unenviable position of having to fight to get your money back.
4. Phantom Charges
If you use a credit card at a hotel, the hotel takes an imprint when you check in, but doesn't charge your card until you check out. It's a far different story with a debit card. Generally, hotels will put a “hold” on funds in your account for more than you're spending. Yes, more. They hold the full amount of your stay, plus an estimated amount for “incidentals,” such as meals at the hotel restaurant and dipping into the mini-bar. This is not an actual charge–the hold will come off your account at the end of your stay. But it affects the available balance in your checking account anyway and can lead to overdrafts. One consumer said these phantom charges cost him $140 in overdraft fees. These “holds” are commonly placed on debit card transactions made at hotels, gas stations and rental car companies.
5. Overdrafts, Overdrafts and More Overdrafts
Overdraft charges have been soaring in recent years and the vast majority of consumers who pay them explain that their overdraft was the result of a debit card transaction. Many consumers naively assumed that if they didn't have sufficient funds in their accounts, their bank wouldn't approve a debit swipe. But they were wrong. The result: a $4 coffee could trigger a $35 overdraft fee. Government regulators are reigning in these fees by demanding that banks give consumers a chance to “opt out” of automatic overdraft protection, but that doesn't start for existing accounts until August. (If you have a new account, it's starts in July.)
6. Skimming
Financial crooks have gotten sophisticated in recent years and are using “skimming” machines to read your card data and charge your account, Givens said. When your debit card is skimmed, your bank account can be drained before you know that you've been had.

Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Jerusalem on the storming of the flotilla and its aftermath
Israeli commandos have attacked a flotilla of aid-carrying ships off the coast of the Gaza Strip, killing as many as 10 people on board.
Dozens more were believed to be injured when troops raided the convoy of six ships, dubbed the Freedom Flotilla, early on Monday.
But those figures were hard to confirm as the flotilla was being held in the Israeli port of Ashdod on Tuesday, with 700 passengers from 30 countries either being detained or in hospital.
Israel said activists on board attacked its commandos as they boarded the ships, while the flotilla's organisers said the Israeli forces opened fire first, as soon as they stormed the convoy.
Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, gave his "full backing" to the military forces after the raid, which he said "was to prevent the infiltration of thousands of rockets, missiles and other arms that could hit our cities, communities or people".
"I give my complete backing to the army, the soldiers and commanders who acted to defend the state and to protect their lives." He also said Israel regretted the loss of life in the raid.
Protests worldwide
Israeli media reported that many of the dead were Turkish nationals.
Hamas, the Palestinian group which governs the Gaza Strip, said the assault was a "massacre" and called on the international community to intervene.
The Hamas leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniya, urged Arabs and Muslims to show their anger by staging protests outside Israeli embassies across the globe.
The call came even as demonstrationsdenouncing the Israeli raid were being held in many cities around the world, including the capitals of Syria, Jordan and Lebanon.
Thousands of Turkish protesters tried to storm the Israeli consulate in Istanbul soon after the news of the operation broke.
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, officially declared a three-day state of mourning.
The United Nations Security Council met on Monday afternoon for an emergency session to discuss the matter.
Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, the chief foreign policy official of the UN, called on Israel to end its "counterproductive" and "unacceptable" blockade of Gaza.
Live ammunition
Al Jazeera's Jamal Elshayyal, on board the flotilla's lead ship, the Mavi Marmara, said in his last report before communications were cut off, that Israeli troops used live ammunition during the assault.
IPOH: The founder of the banned Al Arqam movement, Ashaari Muhammad, died of lung infection at the Ipoh Specialist Hospital here Thursday. He was 73.
Ashaari, who was also Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd chairman, was admitted to the hospital three days ago, while visiting the company's network here.
Affectionately known as Abuya to his followers, Ashaari breathed his last at 2.10pm, said a spokesman of the hospital.
A Global Ikhwan employee, Marzuki Hussein, 57, said Ashaari, who arrived here after visiting Thailand and Kedah, was rushed to the hospital on Monday after complaining of chest pain.
Speaking to reporters after a funeral prayer for the late Ashaari at a company's guest house here, Marzuki said Ashaari would be buried in his home town, Rembau.
Ashaari's hearse left for his family home in Kampung Pilin, Rembau at 5.30pm.
Al Arqam was banned by the National Fatwa Council in August 1994, while Ashaari was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) from Sept 2 to 24, 2004 before he was placed under restricted residence in Rawang and later in Labuan for 10 years.
Al-Arqam or Jamaah Aurad Muhammadiah's activities reached a peak in late 80s and 90s, when it was reported to have about 10,000 followers.
The movement, which is said to spread deviationist Islamic teachings through missionary activities, also branched out into educational, publishing, commercial and agricultural activities. - Bernama
